St Augustine Vacation: The Food, Foodie Friday

When Jason and I started planning our vacation, he wanted somewhat of a plan and asked me to look online for a few things, I would personally like to do, and he'd do the same. Do you know what I ended up doing? Perusing on Yelp, and Urbanspoon for a few hours adding restaurants to my list. I am pretty sure Jason meant tourist spots when he suggested I find a few spots, but clearly I had other ideas.

Fortunately we never had to worry about breakfast, since the B&B we stayed at, Casa de Solana, offered that daily.

The first night in town, Jason and I went a bit off the beaten path and discovered The Floridan, on Cordova Street. It seemed to be a spot with more locals, than tourists, and while I am sure I stuck out as a tourist with my annoying tennis shoes {I hate sneakers with a passion. But we were walking a lot, and I knew Jason would kill me, otherwise}, I didn't feel out of place, by any means. The Floridian is a spot I could easily see here in Tampa, most likely in the Seminole Heights area.

{Cornmeal-dusted green tomatoes, greens, chili-cumin aioli, basil and goat’s feta cheese on artisan bread}
To start, we ordered the fried green tomato bruschetta. I love me some fried green tomatoes, and I love bruschetta, so how could we not order it?! It did not disappoint, ya'll. I don't know necessarily that these two needed to go together, as they were each filling on their own, but the flavors were tasty, and I found myself eating the tomatoes, on their own and eating the bread with the chili-cumin aioli. Delish!

{Shredded chicken, grilled and served  in a whole-wheat tortilla with quinoa, greens,  salsa and datil-chipotle mayo}

For dinner, I ordered Pescado Fresco Burrito, which came with a side salad. The chicken was very flavorful, and a tad spicy.

{ CartWheel Ranch Beef with all the fixings, housemade pickles and chipotle mayo on a ciabatta bun }
I thought it was yummy, until I ate Jason's Dixie Burger. That was phenomenal in flavor! If I could go back, I'd have ordered the same thing.

St. Augustine Vacation: The Sights

Though my birthday is January, 2nd, Jason and I opted to take a birthday trip one week before the big 3-0. Mainly because at my company, we get very busy for the month of January, and aren't able to take any time off. But it was also nice to get out of town during the holidays, where it can be just us. We had such a great time!

Initially, I had thought there would just be an old fort to look at, and that I would become bored. I was so wrong! So wrong in fact, that I have decided to split our trip up into two posts: the touristy sights, and the food. I had NO idea that St. Augustine was such a foodie town, ya'll. And so, I decided all the delicious eats deserved a post of their own.

Segui Room at Casa de Solana

Jason and I stayed at an adorable B&B on Aviles St {the oldest street in St. Augustine}, after my sister recommended them. Casa de Solana was so charming! We booked their three night special, and so we also received a 3 day train pass, and admission to a few historical attractions. I also booked an in room massage, that was heavenly, and much needed. I think everyone should get massages on vacation--it sets the whole tone of the trip; RELAXING!

New York Vacation: Part 1

Last weekend, {or maybe it is two weekends ago, I have lost track of all time, it seems this past month, but I digress},  Jason and I took a three day weekend to Long Island, New York and see our dear friends get hitched!

A little back story: Suiny and Andrew were our next door neighbors. While I like to think I am a friendly neighbor, I have never been overly cheery with people in my building. I blame it on my first apartment at eighteen, where I had some creepy neighbors that scarred me for life. But anyways, back to Andrew and Suiny. They were around my and Jason's age, and had two dogs. Really, it was our dogs that bonded us from the get go.

We started to hang out, and double date, and take our dogs to the park together. They had just moved to Tampa from New York, and were starting their life together. Technically, they were already married, and at the time with Jason and I only having one year under our marriage belt, they were one of our first close pair of married friends. To this day, I feel like they are one of the only other married couples we know that get "it", and one another like I feel Jason and I get each other; if that makes sense.

Christmas, 2012
They have since moved away from Tampa, but when they invited us to their wedding ceremony, we knew there was nowhere else, we would rather be! Plus, the timing between Jason's semesters worked out, perfectly.

We left on a Friday, and were home by Monday, and took one day {Sunday} to go into the city {more on that, later!}. We met loads of their families, drove the bride and groom, drank a lot, danced a ton, and enjoyed some seriously gorgeous weather!

Four hours of sleep, and two plane rides later, Jason and I arrived at the rehearsal dinner, exhausted and happy.

Neighbors turned great friends

Suiny and Andrew, we hope you will be friends for life no matter how far apart we live!

Hope you're enjoying your honeymoon.

XOXO,
Nichole, Jason, Gigi, and Oskar,

Cruise Recap

I am soooo not ready to be home and back to the job hunt reality, but here I am. That vacay was much needed, and I am so glad we got to go!

J and I (along with his sister and her husband) boarded the Carnival Destiny out of Miami for five days to visit Ocho Rios, Jamaica and Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. Other than the fact that it was hotter than Hades, it was a great time!

Waiting to leave and start our trip!

**Picture Overload is about to commence: this is your warning**

Our first full day on board, was a day at sea. We all just kind of hung out, saw some shows and lounged. I did go to the gym with hubs (I *so* wanted to take a pic showing my ass was at the gym on VACATION, but Jason would have killed me) and also dragged the SIL this mini martini tasting.

Day #2, we arrived in Jamaica {mon}. I need to go back, asap. Have you been? I know I live in sunny Florida, but Ocho Rios was absolutely beautiful! We booked the Cool Runnings boat tour to Dunn's River Falls. For $60/person, we got a ride to the falls with a tour guide, and some strong rum punch on the way back.  In hindsight, we could have prob saved some dough and found the falls ourselves, but it was worth the security (in my opinion) of getting there. Plus, did I not mention the rum punch?!

Woot! We finished

Jason dancing with our tour guide on the way back, lol

After the tour, we perused the island a bit on our own. Besides the fact that us girls kept getting asked if we wanted to get our hair braided and Jason got offered some Jamaican ::ahem:: grass, it was fine (for the record, no one got their hair braided or purchased the "other" thing, in case you were wondering). I remember locals in the Bahamas being more pushy so I was prepared this time.

After Jamaica, we all somehow managed to sleep for like four hours, and skipped the main dining room for dinner (we opted for the buffet, instead) before hitting up the comedy club later. The comedian was hilarious and I wish I could remember his name.

Tuesday, we arrived in Grand Cayman. We were docked literally in the center of the ocean and had to take a tender boat to the island.

We didn't book any excursions, but decided to walk the town, instead. No locals stopped us trying to get me to buy some weird wood carving or anything but we did  make the mistake of going into a few jewelery shops where a woman tried (so so hard) to get Jason to buy me a $2500 necklace! Even if we could  have spent that much on a necklace, I don't see us being the type to buy something that grand on vacation. Its just not us.

We ate at a restaurant called, Breezes, and I had the best jerk chicken quesadilla. My rum loving hubby, had a side of shooters with his burger. We be classy, yo.
My adult lemonade ;-)

Bottoms UP!

We also sent a few postcards back home (because I am a dork) and I had to take a photo of their stamp since it was Will & Kate!

After Grand Cayman, I watched the sunset from our balcony and we got ready for dinner:

 Our last day at sea, I dragged Jason to the martini tasting with me. We met some awesome people at the bar this time (coincidentally named, Cheers) and I wish we would have met them before the last night. After the mini tasting, I tried this baby, called the Blue Moon (since I like the beer and all) and it did not disappoint. I was def feeling good.
Blurry, but we made friends with the guy next to us (and his wife) + the older lady (who was a trip! And called her guy, "man friend")

Also on the cruise, we did some trivia, hit up the sports bar (so Jason could watch ESPN) and just lougned while we were on the boat. I was able to read an entire book and watch a few movies. OH! And I had my first ever massage, compliments of my sister in law! OMG, it was heaven. I need more of these in my life.

So that's it, in a nutshell. I do have some travel tips and ways to save money that I'll try and share in another post, soon!

I'm ready to book my next trip! Happy Anniversary, Jason!

When/where are you going for your next vacation?
